Victoria Magazine

Yesterday was hair day! I got mine trimmed and colored and Sara got hers cut. While waiting for my turn, I read a January 1994 copy of Victoria Magazine. I've seen others on the Internet mention the magazine but I'd never read a copy. I'm hooked. I brought the magazine home so I could share an article with Paul and I thought I would share one with you.

Promises to Keep - Deep in the Heart of Texas - A Welcome Home by Kim Walker

The article is about Carol Bolton. She owns a shop in Fredericksburg, Texas and "reminds us to use our heirlooms lavishly and imaginatively." I love it!

In the photo above "grouping pretty solo pieces by color creates family
resemblances."

"Eye Candy" is what Carol calls items on the shelves of a hutch, on the walls, or framing a window.

I love this little quote from Carol:

"If you love it bring it out!" I'm going to remember that in 2008! Why buy a certain item because you like it and then put it away in a box.

Bring it out and enjoy it.

What do you want for Christmas?

I found this poll in a December 1946 Companion Magazine.

(click on the picture for a bigger picture)

The Companion Poll asked What three wishes would you want for the world, your family, yourself. I'll highlight below some of the article.

The response was nearly unanimous:

For the World: "Everywhere peace, with decent food, clothing, shelter, and education."

I guess after World War 2 all these things would be first in every one's mind!

For their family: "Health and happiness in the things we have ;ambition without dissatisfaction."

I don't think you would hear that last part nowadays.

And for themselves: "Health, grace, humor and tact."

Tact? I don't think that word is used much anymore! Too bad! Some grace and humor might be achieved if it was.

Then they asked for the readers to pick material things just for fun. Here are some of the responses:

"A car as long as from here to the corner."

"A station wagon for fishing, camping, hauling, and riding around."

"A place of our own."

"A perfect new house, but if that is too much, dear Santa, please bring a new furnace for this one."

A furnace? I've never heard someone ask Santa for that before! Have you?

Here's a cute one:

"......a new country house, nicely furnished, with space for a landing field and many pets."

A landing field? For an airplane do you think?

Some asked for smaller things:

a photographic enlarger, a canoe, a three quarter ton truck, a power boat large enough to sleep five, electric blankets, and electric train.

And some are not politically correct NOW!:

"A mink coat."

"A Persian coat."

"A three piece red suit trimmed with Persian lamb and matching hat."

Lucy Ricardo would love that!

And here is a good one:

"An original dress by a very well-known designer, with accessories to match."

Another one Lucy would love!

Some wanted labor saving devices:

washing machine, refrigerators, stoves, mixers, sewing machines, mangles, vacuum pressure cookers, dishwashers, and more.

Mangles? What is that? I didn't know they had dishwashers in 1946 either!

And don't forget the jewelry:

A string of real pearls, a new wrist watch with a few diamonds in the sides, or a diamond bracelet that wide and a star sapphire ring. And one asked for a five-carat diamond.

Some wanted to improve themselves:

a beauty course

And then some just wanted ordinary everyday useful items:

a pair of field glasses, a buttonhole attachment for the sewing machine, a valve for an air brush, the complete novels of Jane Austin.

And I like this one best:

"A trip alone for two or three days to shop, to go to the theater and sleep uninterruptedly"

A mother's dream!

What do you want for Christmas?

Remembering those Who severed on this Memorial Day

This Memorial Day let's remember all those you served and are serving to provide the freedom and safety we enjoy.

My Father was a WW2 vetern. This is a photo of the flag from his funeral, a memorial album I made for him and a photo of him taken while serving in the Aleutians Islands in Alaska.

Thinking of Childhood

I've been working on a journal and searching for images to use and came across these old advertisments in an old newspaper. What fun to see pictures of things from our childhood.

I always wanted one of the these bikes with the banana seat & big handlbars but unfortnately I was never to have one. Instead, I always rode my sister's purple Schwinn bike. Thanks Sis for lending it! I had a lot of fun on the bike. I don't think I have one picture of myself on it. We lived in a small town and our house was right next door to the school and on a dead end road. So in the summer time I had the whole school yard for a play ground. What fun I had riding my bike and mom didn't have to worry about me and cars. Being a dead end road there were only cars for the few families that lived there. I never really appreciated all the wide open spaces until I had kids of my own and lived in a larger town where we live now and had to worry about them riding their bikes on the sidewalk and the street!

I did have one of these when I was little. It as fun! I don't rememember too much about it because I was pretty small at the time but I do remember when we gave it to another child. I was sad to see a part of my childhood be over.

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day! Here is a Mother's Day Card my Dad sent to my Grandmother for Mother's Day 1942. He was stationed in the Aluetian's in Alaska during WW2 and sent many cards home to both his parents. I think this card is beautiful. He has signed the card Len and dated it May 9, 42. You can't tell from the picture but the umbrella on the front is made from silk, has padding underneath, and is soft to the touch. There is also lace and ribbon.

A Few Thrift shop finds!

$7 for all this:

I like these canistors. They look very retro to me. $4.00 not bad!

A stone for my garden. I love this verse from the Bible. $2.00 for this little gem.

To every thing there is a season, and a purpose under the heaven Ecclesiastes 3:1

A very cute rooster bottle. There were two of these and Sara snatched up the other one. 99 cents!

I love shopping at Thrift shops, yard sales, & flea markets. You never know what you might find at a bargin price!

The Answers!

Here are the answers to the quiz below!

Room 1 - Dress 1
Room 2 - Dress 3
Room 3 - Dress 4
Room 4 - Dress 2
Room 5 - Dress 5

Dress 1. Three boys & a dog. If you're surrounded by a lively family, here's your dressed-up daytime-to-evening dress. Formal as you like, it's still made in good tough wool that won't straightway show the print of a grubby finger or a muddy paw.

Dress 2. City Skyline. If you have an apartment in the city, you've probably long since discovered that a long-skirted dress is the prettiest most comfortable thing you can wear at home of an evening. Curl up on the sofa and tuck away your feet!

Dress 3. Country weekend. After you've run around in ski pants or slacks all day maybe you'd like to change for dinner into this bright warm plaid. It's a good dress to wear to a neighborhood party too.

Dress 4. Collector's room. If you're a collector at heart and have a room full of lovely things you've brought from here and there, you'll find that the portrait quality of this dress fits completely into your setting.

Dress 5. Modern setting. Modern living often goes at a stepped-up pace. Maybe you rush from the office to meet guests you've asked to your house, maybe you have cocktails at home and go out to dinner. So here's a quick-change costume.

Hope everyone enjoyed going back to the 40's. I sure did! Ann

My DH and I found this lovely photo in a collection of family photos. She's not a relative. Her picture was included in a box of photos from a cousin. We think she was a daughter of a friend of the cousin. I think she is just adorable. I have decided to use her in several of my collages. Posted by Picasa

Does anyone remember wearing gloves? I do. We wore them to church and to girl scout special occasions. Oh the memories. I found this ad in an old newspaper from the 60's that my mother-in-law has saved. Neat.  Posted by Picasa

Here is an interesting ad I found in an old 1950's magazine. Click on the picture to see it up close. Prices are cheap! But it doesn't look comfortable. I'm so glad for my sport bras! Posted by Picasa
